Stupid bill heads to Senate
It’s a dumb idea, so naturally, it has bipartisan support: The Travel Promotion Act.
We’ve talked about it before and will continue to complain about its stupidity because it will ultimately hurt people who want to travel — trust us, we’re not getting all political.
The Travel Promotion Act works like this: It’s a $10 admission ticket to come to America. Of course, if you leave America, you can get your hand stamped and save the $10 if you visit the U.S. within two years.
While Americans can just hop on a plane and fly to Europe, Europeans who do not need a visa must fill out some paper work online within 72 hours of coming to the U.S. Now, they’re also going to have to pay $10. European countries (as well as New Zealand, Australia and South Korea) are now talking about passing a law that requires
Americans to do the same thing.
Now with roughly 50 million people visiting the U.S. every year, that will create a pile of money (say $500 million a year) and that cash, which is becoming more and more worthless, will be used to promote the U.S. abroad by hiring gangs to get drunk and shout — U.S.A. U.S.A. U.S.A.!
Now we would tell you to write your congressman and voice your disapproval, but that would require work — so let’s just sit around and complain about it instead.
