Porktastrophy: U.S. travel industry not immune

swine-flu1Hotels Magazine may have some of its readers red hot with a recent survey it released. Swine flu could impact business.

Maybe that’s why so many news corporations are covering the old H1N1 like a true pigopololis. See, this is what the survey revealed. People are scared of catching this nasty little bug — they are so scared that 3 out of 10 people said they would cancel a trip to an infected area.

Our take: Hogwash. If the bug bites, then stock up on chicken soup and take a weeklong weight loss vacation. Of course, you could accidentally end up with an extended vacation if there’s an outbreak — as flights could be cancelled and you might be forced to stay in another hotel. Hey, it could happen.Pg-17-swine-flu-get_178237s

The best thing to do then? Either use your parents credit card or have some travel insurance on hand.

“Quarantined travelers stand to lose a lot unless they’re properly insured,”said Jim Grace, President and CEO of InsureMyTrip.com, in a news release. “The time you spend in quarantine means time lost enjoying your trip, unused hotel reservations, missed pre-paid planned activities, swine-flu-gets-viraland possibly a future one-way ticket home. Travel insurance protects your financial investment so you don’t pay for an itinerary you can’t follow as planned.”

Of course, Mr. Grace is selling insurance, so bear that in mind, but it is a good point. Also, if you book the vacation he’s talking about, we have no idea why you’re reading anything on this website. It sounds as exciting as having your teeth pulled.
