Stars come out tonight and will burn up the sky

leonid-meteorFor anyone walking home from a bar tonight after the Monday Night Football game, those streaks in the sky are not the result of the 10th can of PBR: They are meteors.

The annual meteor show arrives every November and is named Leonid. It’s the cheapest entertainment you’re going to find on a Monday, any time of the year.

Here’s a little ironic lore to go along with it: A few hundred years ago a great Indian chief looked upon the sky and watched the rain of falling stars and predicted that the white man would arrive in such great numbers it would over run the land.

He would have seen his own prediction come true, had he not died of small pox.

But for the lazy astronomer, the Leonid Meteor Shower is about the best way to enjoy star gazing without having to do any math. Tonight’s show should kick into full gear after 11 p.m., dropping 30-40 meteors every hour and last until morning.

And if you want to get technical, the show will continue after the sun rises, but you won’t be able to see them.
