More airlines join the surcharge jump
American Airlines and Continental have joined the busy day surcharge club — expanding the number of days it will charge passengers an additional money to fly.
The busy day travel charge — or annoyed passenger tax — is the latest craze for airlines to grab a few more dollars in an ala carte charging system that has helped the airlines reap billions of extra dollars this year.
According to CNN, the additional American and Continental have added the additional busy day charges just to keep up with the Jones.
“Basically, it’s a way of the airlines making more money off of travel days that they know are going to be in high demand,” said Graeme Wallace, chief technology officer of FareCompare.com told CNN.
Scott Burgess, executive editor for HipsterTravelGuide.com, added, “Just put it in the ticket price, so people know what they’re paying for. It’s OK to make money, we expect to pay for our tickets and we want airlines to be profitable, but these busy day surcharges are silly. It basically means, people who fly over the weekend have to pay a little extra. These surcharges only favor the retired and unemployed, who we don’t think travel as much.”
