Up in the Air is that George Clooney movie that shows a man obsessed with air miles. We share some of his angst and know the perks of frequent flier bliss of the instant upgrade, the advance boarding and the knowing walk through security.
As part of the movie’s marketing campaign, the movie has started up a website to include Ryansrules.com, named after the fictional Ryan Bingham who lives most of his life at airports. We’re not ashamed to admit that George Clooney is business class through and through — yeah, it’s a man crush — but we could do worse. His rules, however, are dead on.
- Never get in the TSA line behind people with infants.

I’ve never seen a stroller collapse in under 20 min. - Never get in the TSA line behind the elderly.
Their bodies are littered with hidden metal. - Don’t spend a nickel of per diem unless it somehow profits your mileage account.
- Never check a bag. It adds thirty minutes to your flight.
- When packing. Roll your shirts. Tuck socks in shoes.
Fold your suits inside out. - Aisle seats are for those in control of their own destiny.
- If you’re paying to upgrade, then you’re doing something wrong.
- Why do you have liquids? The hotel provides those gratis.
- Wrist watches don’t set off the metal detector.
Stop fumbling with yours. - The red carpet is for those with status.
Here’s a brochure. Please step aside.
You can follow Ryan, or at least some intern for the movie playing the cyber role of him, on Twitter, where you can submit your own travel rules here:
