Gift Guide, Day 13: Bags are better than gift cards

t_2768_01We’ll admit that gift cards are easy — and that’s why they suck.

A gift card says, “at least I remembered to get you something with the least amount of work possible.” They may be easy to wrap, but they’re as personal as mail merge.

So what can you give someone who has everything. Try out these Pan Am bags by kolobags.com. These are the ideal hipster carry all, the company no longer exists, so its steeped in irony, its recognizable in the same way people know about the Vietnam War, and so few people have them, you’ll stand out in a crowd without trying to.

There are a couple of variations of the bag, depending upon what you may want to carry. Our personal favorite is the Pan Am hat bag, and nothing would be cooler than t_2774arriving at your destination and pulling out that Fedora from the bag — talk about a narcissistic entrance, just make sure everyone is watching while you do it.

The hat bag goes for $79.

The Pan Am defiance bag has the coolest name and probably the most utility. I can carry papers, a laptop and just about anything else you may want. Really, this replica is probably much better than the original — which was cheap plastic and these are leather.

So pack them up, and hit the road with these bags — and skip the gift cards this year.

Gift rating: Too cool for school

Good for: People who relish irony and want to grab some attention from strangers.

Not good for: Friends who have no idea what Pan Am was.

Value: A little steep but these well crafted bags should prove to be well worth the investment.
