There are only a few times a year that you can sit outside and watch the sky catch fire.
Tonight is one of those chances.
Starting around 11 p.m. tonight (eastern time) you should be able to see stars falling faster than Tiger Woods as part of the Geminid meteor shower.
According NASA, the annual light show is one of the more dramatic starlit events and tonight, you could see between 50 and 80 meteors shooting across the sky.
Of course, there are three things that might prevent you from seeing the Geminid Meteor Shower.
1. Cloud cover: Those pesky cumulus clouds can blot out the sun, so it’s easy pickings to eliminate the stars.
2. Light Pollution: Big cities and even many small towns emit enough light to cancel out much of what you can see in the sky. However, you can avoid this by moving out to an area with less light.
3. Alcohol: This often leads to early nights in bed or late night outs at bars. It’s a Monday and if you give the sauce a break, you might be able to catch the show. If, however, you end up out and about, then just remember what you’re seeing on your way home.
Now if you can’t watch the Geminid show, you can always listen to it. Not to get all geeky on you, but check out this radio broadcast on NASA’s website.
