Should Cuba open up to America?

In the 50s, Fidel Castro was a cigar smoking hipster. Tall and lean, he led a revolution.

Of course, the results weren’t ideal and he has a few murders under his belt — at least according to the CIA. And now many US politicians are considering opening up the border with the US after more than 40 years of a travel ban.

But now Castro is like that grandmother on her death bed for the past 10 years. Eventually, he’s going to die and when he does, Cuba is finally going to open up to America.

And that idyllic island will be transformed into a casio playing, Big Mac scarfing, buffet serving Vegas of the Caribbean. It’s going to happen and it’s foolish to think companies don’t have plans to start up once the ban is lifted. We certainly hope to have a bureau there as soon as possible.

Hey, if it was good enough for Hemingway, it’s good enough for us — though we readily admit we’re not Hemingway.

But what would it look like? We put our visionary graphic artist onto the task and here’s what she came up with.

    I’d like to say you’re trippin, but…

Meh. I don’t know about Casio-playing, but there’s already no shortage of buffets – the 2 million-plus European and Canadian all-inclusive package tourists that already visit every year gotta eat, you know!

I really hope Americans aren’t hugely disappointed when they arrive in Cuba and find out that in a lot of ways it’s basically Cancun with Che souvenirs.

    1. Your title is misleading. Cuba is open to America, American’s are free to visit and travel throughout the country without any problem whatsoever.

    2. Perhaps you are right about the invasion but just because the U.S. government decides to lift the embargo doesn’t mean Cuba becomes an annex of the United States and our corporations. They DO have a sovereign government that’s been in power for more than 50 years. The government won’t just go away.

    3. The photoshop is very funny.

Actually, the ban is still on. Cuba has opened up to Americans with family members there, but not for people with no connection to the country. There’s been talk that it might and hopefully it does soon.

    Eva,

We wanted American buffets. I’ve actually heard exactly what you’ve said — that the Europeans and Canadians have already turned it into a tourist trap with 50s era cars. But from an American perspective, it’s not mucked up until we get a chance to mess with it.
