In through the out door: Newark security scare turns up nothing

So what happened to cause more than six hours of delays, thousands of people pushed through security check points for a second time and no one actually finding the person who may have breeched security at Newark airport.

No one is sure.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, a man bypassed security by walking through the exit point at the security checkpoint into the Continetial terminal at Newark airport — one of the busiest airports in the United States.

We’ve all walked through these spots (going the right way, hopefully) and past that extremely bored TSA agent sitting at small podium. There’s even a little sign typically to remind you that you about to pass a secure area and additional screening will be required to reenter.

But what if you’re about to cross Checkpoint Charlie and then you decide to turn around and go back into the secure point. And just as as you turn around, the security agent wakes up, or a fellow TSA agent checking bags looks up and sees you walking against the flow of traffic and then runs over to the groggy agent to ask him why a person is going against the current?

Well, you’ve got yourself a security scare. A red alert. A bonafide, let’s shut this joint down and punish every passenger who is in the terminal kind of violation that needs immediate and crushing impunity.

Perhaps that’s not what you need, but that’s what Newark’s passengers got, according to numerous news reports.

Flights were canceled, passengers herded up, pushed out of the terminal and then forced to wait while agents searched the area for the alleged scofflaw.

Six hours later, passengers were rescreened and the mysterious passenger was never found.
