Continental offers refunds, waives fees to stranded passengers
It’s an act of kindness you like hearing about.
Continental Airlines has offered refunds and said it will waive rebooking fees to those passengers who had to deal with the Transportation Security Administration canceling Sunday at Newark Liberty Airport.
The daylong security breech caused thousands of passengers to be removed from Continental’s terminal C at the airport and the cancellation of many of the flights, after security agents decided a man walked through the exit door at a checkpoint.
Security efforts to post a giant “Do Not Enter” sign at the exit point was unable to foil the man who walked right past it as if the rules don’t apply to him. (There’s a video of a man sneaking into the secure area and then leaving the terminal a about 20 minutes later, according to the Newark Star Ledger.)
The newspaper also reported yesterday that the breech happened two hours before the terminal was actually closed and the TSA refuses to release the security tape of the breech — citing that
its an ongoing investigation.
The security guard who failed to notice a man walking past him — the opposite direction of everyone else — has been moved to a non-inspection position during the investigation. What position that is at a security agency is unclear.
The breech could cost Continental tens of thousands of dollars as it deals with all of the stranded passengers who had to be removed from terminal C and then researched after waiting for hours on the airport’s floor. There may have been some good bonding moments for wayward travelers, and some may even laugh about it in the coming years, but no one likes hanging out in Newark longer than need be.
