It’s war: 2010 starts out with low airfares and big sales

This is more like it.

Sure, there have been reports that travel will pick up in 2010 — we think it’s because the recession is over, maybe. But January is barely a week old and three airlines are having an old fashion fare war.  And win the smoke lifts, passengers always win.

According to the LA Times Blog, JetBlue, Southwest and Virgin America are slashing prices and offering tickets for as low as $29.

Here’s what we know:

JetBlue: Shake up the New Year Sale – has lots of good deals coming out of it. JFK to PDX, $99; Boston to Baltimore, $39; Chicago to Long Beach, $99; and many more. (The sale chart is very easy to follow, but tickets need to be booked by Jan. 13.)

Southwest: Three-day sale: This sale ends tonight at midnight in California and there are some excellent deals such as Chicago to Boston for $139; Dallas to Kansas City, $76; Phoenix to Cleveland, $157.

Virgin America: $39 sale: Book by Jan. 11 and enjoy some very cheap flights — and while the $39 ticket may sound the most alluring, really, the deals are some of the longer flights. Boston to LA, $99; DC to San Francisco, $99; and New York to Vegas for $109.

Naturally, make sure to read the fine print on all of the sites, as there are some restrictions and some days are not available for flights — but that’s always the case with these sales. A smart traveler just knows a good deal when he sees it — and books as many flights as possible.

Ugh… thanks! Fixed like no one ever saw it. I’d fire the editor but it is me.
