Detroit: I had a dream; all men enjoyed a three-day weekend
It was once a dream of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for men and women to have an extra day off in January, no matter what their race, creed or color.
That dream lives on — though for many, that dream is more of a floating day off that can be used through out the year — and if you’re lucky twice in the same year.
So celebrate by visiting one of the many places that created the a man worthy of a
three-day weekend — at least that’s what we thought when we got when a garden gnome sent us the Travelocity Easy Escape update out of Detroit Metro. Any excuse to travel is almost as good as no excuse.
Take a short two hour flight down to the ATL, birth and resting place of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and head out to the The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Flight and hotel packages start at $257 per person.
Or, scoot out to D.C. where there are a slew of events are taking place to honor Dr. King over the entire weekend. From the Lincoln Memorial to the Kennedy Center, events are going to be busy and packed with people. Flight and hotel packages start at $233 per person. One of the best things about DC is most museums are free – your tax dollars finally at work for you.
Finally, there is New Orleans. What Detroiter can resist warmth and humidity in January? And you can still learn and celebrate the life of Dr. King in the many events planned throughout the month of January in New Orleans. Consider it a Mardi Gras scouting trip. That heat may be worth the higher ticket price of $308 for flight and hotel.
Whatever you decide, we suggest not spending Monday on the couch.
