Now trains cost less than cars — at least the tickets are.

Amtrak has announced deep discounts on some of its tickets, with prices as low as $18, if you book between now and Jan. 25 for travel dates between Jan. 19 and March 31.

We got the tip from Travelzoo.com, noting these extremely cheap tickets.

  • Pittsburgh-Cleveland … $18
  • Portland-Seattle … $18
  • St. Louis-Chicago … $18
  • Houston-San Antonio … $25
  • Atlanta-Charlotte … $39
  • Denver-Salt Lake City … $42
  • Los Angeles-Oakland … $42
  • Miami-Savannah … $43
  • Atlanta-New Orleans … $46
  • Boston-Chicago … $53
  • Washington, D.C.-Orlando … $78
  • New York City-Miami … $96

Then we found these fares as well off of the Amtrak site, where you can book tickets:

Chicago to Seattle $120
New York City to Atlanta $98
Los Angeles to New Orleans $106
Orlando to Philadelphia $94
Denver to Reno $77
Washington, DC to Orlando $78

If you’ve never  traveled by train, there’s something romantic about the chugging of the engine and slight rocking of the car. There’s an anticipation that comes with the journey that doesn’t happen in a car or plane.

Plus, no other mode of transportation allows you to arrive as refreshed at arrival than a train.
