Breaking news: Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, winter to linger

In case you didn’t know, today is Groundhog’s Day.

That’s when the people of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, gather around Gobbler’s Knob in top hats and wait to see what their local hero, Phil the groundhog, decides to do. Will he come out of his hole and magically determine if winter is over or if it will last for six more weeks?

No, this is not a tradition first started by Bill Murray and the famed repeating moving. This little ceremony has been ongoing since 1886. (Check out the official groundhog’s day website.)

Phil, unfortunately, saw his shadow this morning and scampered back into his hovel: Bundle up, winter is here to stay.

Of course, we don’t blame Phil, you’d do the same thing if you popped your head out of a hole at Gobbler’s Knob and saw a bunch of men in tuxedos grinning like school children at you.

Sadly for Phil, even in six weeks, when winter ends, he’ll still be in Punxsutawney.
