How to save money on hotel rooms — book online, avoid taxes
If you’re looking for another reason to book your hotel room online, California judges have provided it with a ruling yesterday: 15 percent off.
The ruling stated that online travel companies such as Expedia, Travelocity and Priceline are not responsible for collecting obscene hotel taxes imposed by cities, according to Reuters.
The city of Anaheim was trying to collect more than $21 million in back taxes and fines it said the companies owed. However, the companies successfully argued that they do not rent the rooms they buy on the cheap and then sell to the public.
A number of other cities are also trying to cash in on travelers’ avoiding room taxes and extremely high taxes imposed on hotel rooms. But governments caught in a cash grab from travelers remains a common practice.
However, this ruling remains a good sign for people on the go and means if you book a room online, you’re already getting a discount.
