Snuggle tax: American Airlines to charge $8 for pillow and blanket

Can anyone really put a price on warmth and comfort? American Airlines can, it’s 8 bucks.

American Airlines just announced it will begin charging coach passengers $8 for a pillow and a blanket.

The sleep and snuggle tax now being imposed will cost passengers $8 for a blanket, an inflatable pillow and a $10 coupon at Bed, Bath and Beyond — the preferred coupon providing company for airlines around the world. The airline will not make any guarantee that the ultra thin blanket sold will not smell like feet.

In 2008, JetBlue began charging for blankets and pillows and giving passengers a $5 coupon for BB&B. Of course, anyone with a mail box already has a stack of giant blue coupons for 20 percent off at Bed, Bath & Beyond. U.S. Airways charges $7 for a blanket and pillow but doesn’t provide any coupons.

Bed, Bath and Beyond sells a variety of airline fleece blankets as well as neck pillows for those passengers who just can’t take a hint. And if you want to look like a flying priest, you can just buy a snuggie.

The snuggle tax by American Airlines will be on flights in North and Central America on flights of more than two hours. First class and business class passengers will get all of the blankets and pilliows they want for free — though they did spend hundreds of dollars more for their actual seat.

If, during their lunch or dinner, the first class passengers spills lobster juice on the blanket, they will be provided with a new blanket and the soiled one will be sold at a discount to passengers in the back.

International flights will be exempt from the snuggle tax though some airlines are considering selling fresh air.

For anyone thinking ahead, you can buy your own neck pillow and fleece blanket set from Magellan’s for $19.99 — which should include the ability to actually keep you warm. Fly twice on American Airlines and you’re already ahead. The rules are unclear if after passengers buy the pillow and blanket, they are allowed to bring with with them on the plane for another trip.
