Mummy curse leads US to return stolen sarcophagus to Egypt

The mummy is still missing, but at least his coffin will make it back to Egypt after hundreds of years abroad.

According to news reports, U.S. custom officials came across this particular sarcophagus in Miami three years ago and noticed there just wasn’t any paper work — government officials love paperwork, so instantly, they knew something was wrong. The importer didn’t have a receipt so the wooden sarcophagus was confiscated. Curses.

Brendan Fraser was then called in to begin searching out the mummy’s original owner, which, it appears, was Egypt. After a few sword fights, gun play and reading from ancient manuscripts, Brendan was able to trace it to Spain, and then to Egypt. It was likely stolen hundreds of years ago, though its tale remains written only in the Book of the Dead, so no one is allowed to read it out loud.

The National Geographic Society returned the sarcophagus back to Egypt on Wednesday with a warning, don’t let people steal it.

The coffin dates back to the 21st Dynasty, according to experts, though the person who was once inside of it remains at large.
