Continental Airlines announced this morning that it intends to overhaul its menu and start
feeding passengers in coach — for a price. (Thus ending its “free food” policy.)
“Continental Airlines will change its in-flight meal service this fall by introducing a variety of high quality, healthy food choices for purchase in economy class on many U.S./Canada and certain Latin American routes,” a release stated.
Naturally, people up in first class will be able to chow down on complimentary tid-bits, but the unwashed masses packed in the back will have to
pull out their wallet if they expect to eat anything.
“We are improving our economy meal service with a high-quality, industry-leading food-for-purchase program that is consistent with the strong brand image and high service standards for which our customers recognize us,” said Jim Compton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “Our traditional free-food model has served us well for many years, but we need to change to reflect today’s market and customer preferences.”
Yeah, go back and read that again — we’re still not sure what he said either, but we’re looking forward to the upcoming menu — though while we’re waiting, we’ll grab a snack.
