Little Mermaid travels to China: What are you doing this summer?

On March 25 2010 The Little Mermaid began her journey around the world to be part of the world exhibition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. Her departure was marked by a Danish/Chinese ceremony at Langelinie
There’s something wrong when a statue gets more air miles than you.
But that’s happening right now, as the iconic statue of The Little Mermaid — based on Hans Christian Anderson’s story, not the movie — is packed up and flown to China. (She still had to pay a fee for her extra bag of sea combs and scale oil.)
The Little Mermaid, who has sat on the shore of the Baltic Sea for 96 years, will be in China from May 1 to Oct. 31 — and is considering heading down to Australia for a little break when EXPO 2010 ends, though those reports remain unconfirmed.
However, for those planning a summer jaunt to Copenhagen, hoping to see the statuesque fish/woman, they’ll have to settle for a video installation created by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, as part of an artistic exchange between Denmark and China.
We’re not sure what Vikings rowing in from a long trip of pillaging will think, and, frankly, we’re a little too scared to ask.
