Earthquake shakes up Tibet

There’s been a whole lot of shaking going on around the world. Chile moved about a foot to the west, Haiti rattled around like a marble in a bottle, California seems to be teetering on falling into the Pacific and now China is reporting hundreds are dead after a 7.1 earthquake in the western part of the country. It’s almost as if the new world religion is Quaker.

The LA Times reported this morning that quake has killed about 400 people — though HTG expects that number to add at least one zero to that total.

Of course, the damage could be worse in rural western China — if the country actually lets anyone go to the region. The poor people there took construction tips from the first two little pigs and live mostly in wood houses made of logs and mud — which are not ideal for surviving earthquakes.

However, on a bright note, because so many people live in squalor, their water and power were never lost — as they didn’t have it before the quake hit.

Hopefully, the Chinese government works better with other countries this time, so more lives can be saved.

While Western China is not that popular of a tourist location (Tibet is) the quake shouldn’t create many problems for people planning on visiting Eastern China. (It’s a really big country.) We don’t mean to sound insensitive, but hipsters do have only one concern — themselves.

Check out this news report of the quake.
