When you travel for work, you often end up in places that you’d like to visit for fun. You’re on the way to the meeting and you pass the ultimate golf course. Of course, there’s no time for fun on this trip, so you keep moving on. This happens to everyone, even President Obama.

While out on the 2008 campaign tour, Obama swung through Asheville, NC for a brief stop to rally the masses and get the vote. Driving to his rally, he spotted a neat little town with a lot to offer, but didn’t have the time to experience any of it. Having gotten the vote enough to carry the state, he decided to pay the residents back with a visit this weekend.

No official itinerary has been released for Obama’s visit but Asheville offers an interesting array of things to do. This weekend the President can go to the Asheville City Market, Bark in the Park (shoulda brought the dog!) or go see the Blue Ridge Rollergirls in action at the Civic Center. Somehow, I don’t think he and Michelle will partake of the latter.

Tried and true vacation plans will prevail. Some golf, spa time, fine dining and perhaps a tour of the Biltmore. The short time of the trip doesn’t allow for much more. And since the top priority of this trip is to get some much needed relaxation time without the kids, there is not much need to do much more.

So, this weekend as the people of Asheville may be slightly inconvenienced with road closures, increased police presence and a plethora of men in black suits – just remember, it’s for the good of the country.
