Happy Birthday Glacier National Park, you deserve some Smuckers

Willard Scott should be giving a Smuckers Birthday wishes to Glacier National Park, which turns 100 years and one day today.

Sure, the glaciers are melting and some have considered changing its name to “big cold lake national park,”, but its still one of the most visited national parks in the nation.

The park became just the 10th National Park signed over by President Teddy Roosevelt on May 11, 1910. (The national park system should be called the Roosevelt Park System because of his work to save pristine lands around the nation.)

Going to some of these Western parks is something every person should plan at least once in their life. They are breath taking in every aspect. However, they are also crowded — even more so nowadays with strict limits placed on some of them for the amount of people allowed into them or onto the campsites. (They have to stay pristine, which is difficult to do when thousands of people are trampling all over the nature.)

There are some ways to reserve camping space there and follow up when are the best times to go. Check out the National Park Service’s reservation site here.

While the park is open year round, some roads are left untouched until May due to heavy snowfall. You can get updates here.

For the park’s 100th Birthday, there will be special events throughout the year — and the National Parks Service has set up a special website here to chronicle the year and provide a calendar of events.  (You can also download a bunch of interesting history of the park.)

But most of all, the park offers incredible vistas, views and a complete lack of cell phone service. Instead of staying connected to the outside world, it’s better to reconnect with yourself.

And if you think we’re off base, just check out some of these photos from the National Parks Service staff.
