World Cup Vuvuzela Update – it’s here to stay – till someone gets hurt

The World Cup rolls on and the vuvuzela controversy continues.

Sure Futbol (aka Soccer) fans across the world are obnoxious. As with any sport, the fans are insane, loud and in your face. The vuvuzela horn brings a whole new level of obnoxiousness… or does it?

There is so much disdain for the horns that the Tournament Committee was considering a ban on vuvuzelas being brought into the stadiums.

Players are complaining that they can’t hear each other on the field, fans in the stands are complaining of bleeding ears and of course, the television viewing public is wondering why the World Cup is being played in stadiums filled with swarming African Bees.

On Monday, Rich Mkhondo, a spokesman for the World Cup organizing committee stated the vuvuzela playing would continue to be allowed during the tournament. This is as long as it’s only played and not used as a weapon against fans or players (WC organizers are fair game). He also mentioned that complaints about the vuvuzela have been minimal. Apparently, this guy hasn’t been on the internet.

Ear plugs come in all colors, so you can still cheer on the home team

One good thing, ear plug sales are up in South Africa!

In the defense of the horns, they’re fun and cute. It’s South Africa’s noisy gift to the sports world. You can imagine thousands of vuvuzelas will be passed out at any outdoor football game (that is American football). It’ll only help the home team as the noise drowns out any calls from the opposing team. Open air stadiums will be on the same footing as indoor stadiums, except for that pesky weather thing. Brilliant!

On the other hand, watching the World Cup is an experience that is much better served without the horns. It’s amazing how each teams’ fans are there, having traveled from near and far. You can hear them singing, fighting, chanting and generally having a blast out there watching the game. You leave the game or the party singing Ronaldo to the tune of Volare. It’s fun and you don’t have a headache or broken eardrums after the event.

Grin and bare it. It’s all for fun anyway.
