Run as fast as you can, and maybe, just maybe, nobody gets hurt.

Who are we kidding? Somebody is going to get hurt in Pamplona, Spain — they always do this time of the year. For the next nine days, casualties are going to start mounting. This morning at 8 a.m., two people were injured in the first day of the running of the bulls, according to the Associated Press, which was copying the information from a Spanish website. But throughout bars in the tiny Spanish city, hundreds more are regaling tales of their historic run and showing off the cuts and scrapes they endured.

Tomorrow will be the same.

The annual 850 meter course through town pits giant bulls against drunk runners in a challenge of stupidity and bravery. Last year was the first time in 15 years that a person was killed during the running of the bulls.

A typical day starts the night before as party goers “prepare” for the morning rush hour hour by finding as much courage as possible in the form of liquid. They then stay up until the 8 a.m. running of the bulls by standing at different places along the route. The bulls are then set loose and made to run down the street, trampling nicely dressed runners who cannot get out of the way just fall down because they are too drunk.

However, most bulls, whose hoofs are not very good on cobble stone, often fall as well. Those bulls that survive the run will be killed later that day during a bull fight, so the run is really their last chance to score a few points before hitting the ring.
