Turkish Airlines: less weight makes flying easier

Last week, there was a news story about Turkish Airlines giving an ultimatum to 28 flight attendants to lose weight or lose their flying priviledges. Given six months of unpaid leave to trim down,  these attendants had been warned before about the need to lose weight.

Back in the day, American carriers had requirements restricting weight, age and marriage on it’s then called stewardesses. Some say it was sexist, degrading and unfair and for the most part, it was. Unions came in and wiped out all of the restrictions and have opened the skys to all, flabby or fit, young or old, it doesn’t matter.

Turkish Airlines Flight Hostess. Yes, Hostess.

What we’re left with is a bunch of tired, stressed, and out of shape flight attendants. Think Steve Slater. What the US carriers need is a fitness requirement.

This requirement creates several benefits. Healthier attendants able to do their job (which is more related to safety than being a server), better looking attendants and happier attendants. Let’s be honest, a person who exercises regularlly will be more healthy in body and mind.

Another benefit is less weight on the planes. Isn’t that one of the excuses for all the stupid bag fees and carry on limitations? If the airlines want to limit the weight being hauled around, then they should look in the mirror and get their flight attendants in smaller sizes.
