Travel and weather have always worked together — just ask Christopher Columbus or any Viking you happen across.
New York City just got beat up by a mysterious blast of wind (yes, even the Big Apple can have a tornado), and a few weeks ago Herme ripped up the east coast with big waves and raid. All of those good deals in the Caribbean right now are certainly tied to the fact a hurricane can spin off the coast of Africa at any moment and turn a long island weekend in a horror story. Igor and Julia are on their way right now.
So how do you plan around the weather?
Well, you can’t. You could stay at home and not ever go anywhere or you could figure out where you want to go and just go. You can always go to a few websites like The Weather Channel to see what the weather will be like when you’re headed off to a place (a simple thing but can make a difference on the coat you bring). The Weather Underground is another good site to check things out. Even many guide books will outline typical weather for any given month.
There are always the options of travel insurance — which rarely kicks
in when it rains but does come in handy when flights are canceled due to storms or the hotel roof is blown off. But the down side to travel insurance is that it costs money and you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it. Companies like WorldNomads are certainly worth consideration. We’ve chatted informally with them and certainly have been impressed with them — though we haven’t used their services.
So what to do? Worrying about the weather seems like a silly way to waste energy. You can’t change it, and, even if it’s not ideal when you arrive at some great city, just wait, it’ll change. It always does.
