this is a puerile article. come on, get real. the tsa screeners were trying to do their job under difficult circumstances with a publicity seeking jerk. to compare TSA screening procedures with Nazi protocols is idiotic. if you're such a genius, why don't you invent protocols and technologies that make security screening fool proof and friendly to civil liberties? Not that easy if you spent at least 20 minutes thinking about it. If you think TSA is bad, you are clueless about how poor the pre-TSA airline contractors in the U.S. were - low bids were the winner, forget about quality aned accountability.
Think of people who lost loved ones on 9/11 and before that on Pan Am 103 and TWA 847. Airport screening is necessary and freak shows like Rand Paul's divert attention from what is needed - e.g. intelligent procedures that respect civil liberties. He is the opposite of a patriot by diverting federal resources from their primary mission - to protect the travelling public. Shame on him and shame on you.

There's something refreshing when even Average Joe has become subversive. I was reading about one of the tests for the chat downs and the TSA focused on one guy who was looking down at the ground the whole time he waited in line. He was quiet, and he looked really sad. When they started questioning him, he was slow to answer them, acting distracted and upset. This set off a number of alarms for the TSA and they pulled him to the side and grilled him for 45 minutes, causing him to miss his flight. He was sad, and depressed and all around upset. He was supposed to catch a flight to his mother's funeral.

Human hands patdown, cavity search, imaging machine that makes you naked to the operator while blasting you with radiation, now Gestapo officer asking you anything he wants to. No insult or illegality is too good to protect airline passengers from ... from ... what, a "terrorist"? They're everywhere, you know. Our government can't tell you much about them bacause it's classified, just take it on faith, they're everywhere and are out to get you and your babies. You don't believe your government? Are you some kind of subversive? We'll need to ask you a few questions. One of the pillars of fascism is to create fear to justify oppression.

Really? Insulting us because we value things constitutional rights and a less intrusive government seems like the kind of thing the TSA would resort to.

The only thing that will stop this insanity is for American businesses to pressure government to back off. Maybe, instead of writing to our Senators we should be writing to Steve Jobs.

Absolutely Jim. Plus, there was the case in the Hawaii where no bags checked bags were inspected at all because 30 different TSA agents just sat there and twiddled their thumbs. All of those flights without inspected bags? Nothing happened. Despite all of those "threats" we're facing, which just are true or based in fact.

Thanks so much. I still go to the TSA blog but more to read the comments than believe the stories. Some of the stuff they put up is down right offensive.

Excellent and entertaining piece. TSA has employed the “Big Lie” strategy in their effort to convince Congress and the public that the organization is not as corrupt and arrogant as it actually is. This method relies on an endless of streams of lies, obfuscations and denials of facts in an attempt to persuade people that they did not see or experience that which is plainly obvious. There have been dozens of instances where victim or witness accounts have been disputed by TSA only to later to be confirmed after being captured on video, which explains their aversion to perfectly legal attempts to record them at checkpoints.

This strategy has been used by countless Government agencies and politician with varying success for decades and includes such notable examples as the above ground nuclear testing that was deemed safe by DoD, Agent Orange which DoD maintained posed no health risk and the Monica Lewinsky scandal in which Bill Clinton denied “having sexual relations with that woman” despite DNA evidence on the infamous blue dress. TSA is just the latest and possibly the most inept agency to pursue this course.

When the scanners were put into service in November TSA contended that the images were cartoonish and according to Blogger Bob at TSA could be on the cover of Readers Digest or shown to children. Just this week Denver TSA area director Pat Ahlstrom, speaking on the implementation of the privacy software said of the scans up until now "They were graphic, no doubt about it," TSA has also avoided mentioning that the Rapi-Scan backscatter x-ray units will not get the privacy and will continue to display the very graphic images Mr. Ahlstrom describes.

Much like the childhood story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, some Americans have refused to acknowledge that the Emperor is indeed naked, even though their eyes tell them he is. Fortunately, many have begun to realize that this agency and its management are corrupt and operating against the interests and will of those they supposedly serve. It is long past time to dismantle this agency and prosecute those responsible for this travesty.
